Walmart, Kroger, Costco make top three grocery retailers list

Data analytics company Numerator has identified the top grocery retailers by dollar share, and Walmart tops the list for the third year in a row, followed by Kroger, which is losing market share.

The report tracks purchase data and surveys verified buyers to provide insight into consumer purchase behavior.

“In addition, Numerator’s TruView solution allows for omnichannel market share measurement at the consumer level — both in-store and online,” the company said in a press release.

For the last three years, Walmart has maintained a market share by dollars spent of more than 20% and increased its market share gradually every year. In 2021, Walmart captured 21.9%, followed by 22.6% in 2022, and 23.6% in 2023, putting the retail giant at the top of the list.

Meanwhile, Kroger’s share of dollars spent has declined over the last three years with 11.2% in 2021, 10.6% in 2022, and 10.1% in 2023.

Costco has seen its market share increase over the last three years with 8.8% in 2021, 9% in 2022, and 9.2% in 2023.

Albertsons took the fourth spot in 2023, capturing 6.4% over the course of the year. That’s down from 6.7% in 2022 and 6.5% in 2021.

In fifth place, Publix has remained flat over the last three years, earning 4.8% annually since 2021.

Once again, Walmart claimed the top spot in grocery market share followed by Kroger and Costco. Is there any chance a retailer can dethrone Walmart, or will it take something like a mega merger to shake things up?
