After a difficult year in 2023, food retailers and wholesalers have grown slightly more positive in their outlook for the year ahead, according to this year’s Supermarket News Retailer Expectations Survey. Just over half — 52% — of retailer and wholesaler respondents said they were at least “fairly confident” in the strength of the economy, including 8% who said they were “extremely confident.” That marks the first year-to-year outlook improvement in the four-year history of the survey. Private label brands achieved record success in 2023

Sales of store brands increased $10.1 billion to a record $236.3 billion last year compared to 2022, according to PLMA’s just-released 2024 Private Label Report. That represents a 4.7% rise in dollar sales in all outlets from Jan. 1 to Dec. 31, 2023, versus the same period the previous year, according to the report. Store brands bested national brands, which grew 3.4% in dollar sales. Compared to 2019, annual store brand dollar sales in 2023 increased by $60.2 billion, a 34% gain. Foodstuffs South Island has announced the opening of a new PAK’nSAVE store at Papanui, marking a significant milestone. This is the first PAK’nSAVE store opened in Canterbury since PAK’nSAVE Rangiora opened in September 2015. DoorDash is expanding its SNAP/EBT payment offerings by adding additional grocers. The delivery company first launched its SNAP/EBT payment capability in 2023. Since then, DoorDash says over 1.1 million consumers have added their SNAP/EBT cards to the platform. Kroger and Albertsons both filed sharply worded comments this week asserting that the Federal Trade Commission defined the competitive retail and labor markets much too narrowly in its efforts to block the retailers’ planned mergers.
